Food Memories

During our exhibition at Corinium Museum (25th April – 5th July 2015) we asked people to share their food memories with us and hang them on a pair of olive trees. Here are the 379 memories that people shared with us!

All the spelling, punctuation etc is the same as that given on the tag. Apologies, if I have not read your handwriting correctly – please let me know, if so!

Our memory trees, already filling up with people's food memories. The trees are both olive trees, which were grown widely around the Mediterranean during the Roman period.

  11. I was told that as a baby I grabbed a jalapeno pepper out of a dish on the table and put it in my mouth before anyone could stop me. I screwed up my face for quite a long time. Then took another pepper!

  47. Buying cool damp cubes of marshmallow in Derby. Packed in a card box, in layers with waxed paper. Made with real marsh mallow not gelatin. Wonderful. (60-55 yrs ago)
  48. Cooking pears – grew on 2 trees – about 60-80 feet high. Fell off about November. Rock hard, weighed about a pound. cooked overnight in the sold fuel stove.

  49. Scraping brick shaped block of salt, sculpting shapes – the salt was then used to salt down runner beans from the garden, sliced & packed in layers with the salt, kept in crocks in the larder. Needed several changes of water when cooking

  51. Apple and snickers snack when I was 14 on a very old boat in Brittany in march RIGHT at the end of the storm season… Everything tasted salty because we were covered in salt water and I always disappointed when my snickers are not salty now…

  260. When I was about 2-3 years old my uncle bought a new car – very proud of its leather seats. My mother rushed my lunch of dippy egg at speed. Obviously comes back equally quickly over the new leather seats much to everyone’s annoyance. I still cant eat soft boiled eggs, fried eggs or poached egg.

  296. When I was 2, WWII began and as it progressed, having tasted it yearned for cheese. I would even eat the cheesecloth that used to be wrapped around the cheeses. I still love cheese.
